Toronto-based Latin powerhouse band, Sean Bellaviti & Conjunto Lacalu, is at the leading edge of Canada’s salsa revival. Rooting itself in the Cuban conjunto tradition, the internationally-renowned 11-piece band couples a dynamic three-trumpet horn section with Afro-Cuban percussion, piano, bass and Cuban tres guitar to create a classic salsa sound.
Performing primarily original compositions, Conjunto Lacalu’s sound and style pays homage to predecessors such as Conjunto Clasico and Sonora Ponceña. Founded in 2008 by pianist Sean Bellaviti, the band has been featured at the Hispanic Fiesta, Salsa on St. Clair and the Pan Am Games Torch Run and as the backing ensemble for Toronto appearances by artists such as Tito Rojas, Jimmy Bosch, Tony Vega and Eddie Santiago.
Sean Bellaviti & Conjunto Lacalu released their debut CD Toronto Mambo on the Lulaworld label, as part of the 2017 Lulaworld festival. With tunes featuring the international guests trombonist Jimmy Bosch and singer Herman Olivera, the album has received critical acclaim.
