Award-winning Hilario Durán to perform two solo piano concerts.

Juno-award winning and Grammy-nominated pianist Hilario Durán has long been considered a leading light on the the Canadian jazz scene. Chucho Valdés has declared Durán to be one of the greatest Cuban pianists of the 20th century, calling him “an unparalleled pianist; composer and arranger of the first order.”

His work with Jane Bunnett, Paquito D’Rivera and Horacio “El Negro” Hernandez, as well as with his trio, jazz quintet, Havana Remembered Orchestra and 20-piece big band have earned him international recognition and lead to many tours across Canada, Europe and the U.S.

Lula has had the great pleasure of presenting Mr. Durán in many formations over the past fourteen years, including three previous solo performances. Since these breathtaking concerts were met with great enthusiasm by Lula audiences, we’ve asked Hilario to repeat this performance on two evenings: January 18 and 25th.

Always looking to stretch his creative boundaries, Hilario Durán will perform his original compositions which reflect a wide range of influences including classical, jazz, traditional and modern Cuban melodies and rhythms; Afro-Cuban prayers influenced by gospel harmonies; American standards; Spanish styles, Flamenco-influenced melodies and Argentinean traditions.

This is a rare opportunity to hear this living legend of Latin jazz in Lula’s intimate setting on a night when audiences are there to listen attentively.

In anticipation of these special presentations, Lula Co-Artistic Director, Tracy Jenkins asked Mr. Durán to share with us some of his plans for 2017. Here are some excerpts from that interview:

Tracy: Hilario, can you tell us some of the highlights for this year?

Hilario: Yes, I’m very happy to say that later this month, I will be traveling to Veradero, Cuba as part of the International Jazz Safari to Cuba. The show is presented by radio host Jaymz Bee and JazzFM91.

Tracy: Can fans look forward to another recording in the near future?

Hilario: Yes, this year I’ll also be releasing a new album on Alma Records. This CD and film about my musical life was recorded in in Cuba last November and features all-star Cuban artists as Horacio “El Negro,” Changuito, Pancho Amat and Rumberos de Cuba, among others. I will be touring Canada this summer to promote this new material. People can check my site for details of the release which will be announced soon.

Tracy: Thank you Hilario! We’re really excited about these performances in Lula and can’t wait to hear the new CD!
